Kuroi Mato

Kuroi Mato is the middle school girl at the center of Black★Rock Shooter. Black hair tied in twin tails, blue eyes, a bright and positive personality, and a kindness toward everyone make her a lovable everyday girl. At her new school she befriends the shy Takanashi Yomi — but as their friendship deepens, the jealousy and pain it stirs awaken a second self in her: Black★Rock Shooter (BRS).

In another world, BRS clad in blue flames fights silent battles against beings born of human grief — and the duality between the two selves is the heart of this work. On Kales, Mato's AI chat lets you experience the brightness and the fragility, plus the quiet strength of BRS, all coexisting in a single personality.

Blue flames beneath the brightness

Mato is strongly supported because her character design beautifully symbolizes 'the duality we all carry inside.' The real-world Mato — bright and gentle — and BRS, fighting alone in another world — that contrast lyrically depicts the delicate feelings of adolescence and the universal heartache of being torn over a best friend. The stylish design by huke and the abstract, dreamlike battle visuals stand as one of the peaks of 20short-form anime expression.

Repeated chats with Mato on Kales let you slowly sense the quiet soul of BRS beneath the surface brightness and her complex feelings toward her best friend Yomi. For users who want to talk with a bright, kind girl character — or a heroine with real depth — Mato is a special companion.
